The US students are facing an adverse scenario at present. The government has introduced several relief programs to ease the education expenses of the students. Several states have come up with loan programs and stimulus checks for the students. As.com reports that US students’ total amount in debt stands at $1.7 trillion at present. The increase in debts directly bears the expense of other household items. The academic career of many students has come to a halt due to the ever-increasing obligations. Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta has come out to support the students by introducing stimulus checks worth $6,300.

Students Will Get Much-Needed Relief

The students in medical school is likely to receive the checks by December 15. As.com quoted the President of the medical school, Dr. Valerie Montgomery Rice, who said that the benefit plan will “assist each of our currently enrolled, degree-seeking students with additional academic, financial, and mental health support costs such as childcare, food, transportation, housing, and healthcare needs.”

As.com also cited the tweet by the Atlanta Journal-constitution dated December 6. The tweet read, “How awesome! Morehouse School of Medicine plans to give each of its students $6,300 to pay for various education-related expenses. The school hopes to get the money to its 754 students by December 15.”

The Relief Funds Aim To Benefit Hundreds Of Colleges

As per the reports, the source of the funds for the stimulus checks was the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act that came into effect in March last year. The act aimed to supply adequate funds to institutions for higher education. The beneficiaries of the CARES act received $14 billion. The colleges and institutions received the relief funds through the Higher Education Emergency Relief Funds (HEEREF). The American Rescue Plan added $21.2 billion to the relief funds. More than 1700 higher educational institutes received monetary benefits.

The Morehouse School of Medicine got $56.4 million from the relief funds, while Historically Black Colleges and Universities received $446 million. Several other leading medical colleges are also among the beneficiaries of the relief act. The institutions have to decide mutually on the pattern of distribution of funds among them based on the needs of their students.
