Aluminum wrap used to protect homes in California wildfires
Some residents of California facing the fury of the unprecedented fury of forest fires have started to use aluminum to try and save flammable things from being gutted.
The reason for falling back on this unique solution is the characteristic of aluminum to be able to withstand intensive heat for short periods of time – such as tin foil from the kitchen drawer. Many are using the material that is modeled after the tent-like shelters that are used by wildland firefighters as a last resort to protect themselves when trapped by flames.
“It’s pretty expensive, and you’d feel stupid if they stopped the fire before it got close,” says Martin Diky, who used the flexible aluminum sheets to protect his $700,000 wooden house near Lake Tahoe. “But I’m really glad we did it. It was pretty nerve-wracking when the flames came down the slope.”
The aluminum sheets are pricey and difficult to install, but tend to serve the purpose – the material has saved some properties including some historic cabins managed by the government.
The base of the world’s largest tree was wrapped in aluminum last week by fire crews in huge old-growth sequoias in California’s Sequoia National Park to save it from wildfires burning nearby. Sensing the possibility of intense flames, firefighters also wrapped the huge General Sherman Tree as well as some of the other sequoias in the Giant Forest, a museum, as well as some other buildings.
Using aluminum sheets to wrap an object helps to deflect heat away – in turn preventing flammable materials from combusting. Additionally, embers flying through the air – which is a primary cause of the spread of wildfires, are also kept away. The wrap’s have the capacity to withstand the heat of up to 1,022 degrees Fahrenheit (550 Celsius) as they have a fiberglass backing and acrylic adhesive.
On Social media, firefighters equated the wraps to a “big baked potato” while one of them who helped install some described the experience as “wrapping Christmas presents.”
According to forest Service officials, such wraps are being used for the past number of years especially throughout the American West to protect sensitive structures.
Phil Heitzke, an agency battalion chief, said that the Angora Ridge Lookout, registered historic fire lookout tower, at Lake Tahoe, was wrapped by them.
“Many times, Forest Service structures are wrapped well in advance of the fire,” he said in a statement.
The price of fire shield rolls that are 5 feet (1.5 meters) wide by 200 feet (61 meters) long is typically coming for about $700 each but the installation by a contractor can cost thousands of dollars.
The sheets “demonstrated both remarkable performance and technical limitations”, said a mechanical engineering professor at Ohio’s Case Western Reserve University in an article based on 10 years of research related to fire protective wraps in the Frontiers in Mechanical Engineering journal in 2019.

It has been confirmed that the body of former British rugby league player Bryn Hargreaves, who vanished more than a year ago, was discovered close to his home.
On January 16, 2022, Mr Hargreaves—who was 36 then—was reported missing after failing to show up for work in West Virginia, the US.
His disappearance prompted a “big scale” search of the Cheat Lake area “over a several month period,” according to the Monongalia County Sheriff’s Office, but it was unsuccessful.
But on February 26, in the Cheat Lake region of Monongalia County, West Virginia, Mr Hargreaves’ bones were discovered in a wooded area between South Peirpont Road and The Hannalei Subdivision. His residence and last known location are just a few yards away at the Monongalia County Whisper Creek Apartment Complex off South Pierpont Road.
Tuesday, Maria Andrews, the player’s mother, shared a photo on Facebook with the comment: “heartbroken xxx”, “My Son. I closed my eyes but for a moment and suddenly a man stood where my boy used to be. I may not be able to carry you now in my arms, but I will always carry you in my heart. You have given me so many reasons to be proud of the man you have become, but the proudest moment for me is telling others that you are My Son. I LOVE YOU NOW AND FOREVER.”
The Sheriff’s Office stated on its Facebook page that it is awaiting the results of the autopsy before determining the cause and manner of death.
Fourteen months after he was last seen, Mr Hargreaves’ older brother, Gareth Hargreaves, posted on Facebook to inform of the former player’s death.
“RIP Bryn Hargreaves,” the post began. “With incredible sadness, I can confirm after 14 months we have finally found Bryn. We still do not know the cause of death or what actually happened on 3/1/22. Thanks to all those that have helped in the search. We would appreciate a little space and will keep you updated when we have any further information x.”
When police officers got to the rugby player’s apartment in Morgantown, West Virginia, after receiving a missing person call on January 16, 2017, they discovered the door was unlocked, and the shower was running. The Monongalia County Sheriff’s Office searched the region around Cheat Lake with sniffer dogs but could not locate him.
Throughout the past year, Mr Hargreaves has been the subject of numerous futile attempts to locate him. To gather money for a private investigator to take on the duty of finding him, his family set up a GoFundMe page.
Mr Hargreaves, raised in Wigan, fulfilled a childhood fantasy by joining the Warriors in the Super League. Before moving to the United States to work in the oil and gas industry ten years ago, soon after his last club, the Bradford Bulls, went out of business, he also played for St Helens, where he won the 2008 Challenge Cup.
Before, he and his American wife Amy, whom he met in Mexico, resided in Pittsburgh. They started living separately after four years and eventually got divorced.
When Hargreaves vanished, his family speculated that he might have been kidnapped.

We send our deepest condolences to Willis’ wife, Gale, his family, and many friends and fans.”
Reed’s incredible career, which included two NBA championships, two MVP awards in the NBA Finals, and seven appearances in the All-Star Game, is best known for the memorable 1969–70 season. He was the first player to win the NBA Finals MVP title, the All-Star Game MVP, and the regular season MVP in the same year.
The moment that would go down in history was him entering the arena for Game 7 of the 1970 Finals after missing Game 6 due to a thigh injury he sustained in Game 5, which left the Knicks unable to counteract Wilt Chamberlain of the Lakers. Reed led the squad to its first championship with four early points in that game despite playing little the rest of the way.
Reed was born in Hico, Louisiana, in 1942 and attended college there before helping Grambling State win the 1961 NAIA championship. At 6’9″, he was viewed as an undersized centre, but clubs quickly realised he played much bigger than that as he went on to win the 1965 Rookie of the Year title.
Reed averaged 18.7 points, and 12.9 rebounds throughout his career, and the Knicks retired his No. 19 in honour of him. In 1982, he was chosen for the Hall of Fame.
